Kenwood unveils new underseat active subwoofer for UK market

Kenwood has unveiled its new underseat speaker: the KSC-PSW7EQ.

The Nagano-based audio system company said in a statement that its newest active subwoofer can bring “new levels of performance and adjustability, drastically improving the sound quality of even the humblest car audio system by adding deeper bass tones.”

One of the highlights of Kenwood’s KSC-PSW7EQ underseat active subwoofer is its diminuitive size. It only measures 280 millimeters (width) x 70mm (height) x 200mm (depth), which means that the subwoofer can literally be hidden under the seat of most cars.

Kenwood mentions that its dimensions allow “the driver or passenger to feel as well as hear the benefit of the extra bass” and that placing it under the seats “also utilizes space which is usually wasted in the car’s interior.”

Alternatively, the Kenwood KSC-PSW7EQ can be mounted in the boot, adjacent to the speaker and power sources for simpler fitting.

Despite its compact size though, the Japanese audio firm’s underseat active subwoofer is built with an innovative design that allows the woofer cone to be made 14 percent bigger than its predecessor, making the bass reproduction even deeper. Kenwood’s special “micro-step” shape built into the long edge of the woofer’s diaphragm suppresses unwanted movement, ensuring accurate bass sound reproduction.

Packed into the compact chassis is a Class D amplifier, which uses switching technology to ensure the unit uses minimum power and creates less heat than other types of amplification. This ensures the subwoofer will not only run for longer periods of time but also use less energy altogether.

To give a choice of bass responses, Kenwood’s KSC-PSW7EQ features a wired remote control that puts the power in the hands of the driver. In addition to allowing the volume and frequency of the unit to be adjusted manually, the owner can use Kenwood’s Active EQ Technology to select from three types of bass sound characteristics to match various genres of music.

Kenwood’s underseat active subwoofer features three selectable modes: Heavy, Tight, and Flat.

Heavy mode provides a deep sound quality with a sense of volume, with bass tones that peak at a lower frequency. Meanwhile, the Tight setting has a richer, more aggressive bass with a higher frequency. Flat, on the other hand, provides a basic sound quality which still has much improved acoustic characteristics but is more suited for general use and speech.

The Kenwood KSC-PSW7EQ is now available in the United Kingdom from Halfords and other retailers, with a recommended retail price of £249.99 (around P16,875).

Locally, Kenwood’s automotive-related offerings include touchscreen audio head units, high-resolution speaker systems, and high-definition dashboard cameras.
