Lego Builds Life-Size Bugatti Chiron

Ever the need to challenge themselves, the folks at Lego finally came up with a life-size 2018 Bugatti Chiron after launching a 1/8 scale kit of the hypercar in June of this year. Built from over one million Lego Technic pieces, the most impressive thing about this Lego Bugatti is that it is fully operational--complete with a 16-cylinder facsimile and a functioning gearbox.

The car's engine was sourced from the Lego Power Function toy line, comprising 2,302 motors connected by 4,032 gear wheels. Despite the impressive engine specs, the Lego Bugatti is still no match for the real thing, with only 5 hp and 92 Nm of torque as opposed to the 1,500 hp and 1,600 Nm of the real thing.

Though it may not drive fast, it can be driven like a real car. To add to the realism of the experience, the interior comes with everything you'll find in an actual 2018 Chiron, including steering wheel and seats--except they are all made completely of Lego. In fact, the only thing that's not made from Lego pieces are the wheels, tires, and front badge.

Lego took the car to Volkswagen's Ehra Lessien test track in Germany--where the real Chiron was developed--and had it driven by 24 Hours of Le Mans-winning racing driver and Bugatti brand ambassador Andy Wallace to prove that the car is more than just a display.

"Driving the Lego Chiron was a great experience, which I thoroughly enjoyed," Wallace said in a statement. "All those years ago I could never have imagined that one day I would actually drive a Lego car!"

The Lego Bugatti took 13,000 hours for the toy company's master builders to complete. It makes its public debut at the Formula One Italian Grand Prix in Monza on August 30.
