Mattel, Inc. announced that it will be releasing special limited-edition Matchbox models to commemorate the brand’s 70th anniversary.

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • What will be the special feature Matchbox fans and collectors can expect from the 70th-anniversary-edition models?

According to Mattel, the 70th-anniversary-edition Matchbox models will feature special platinum details to commemorate the brand’s platinum anniversary.
  • What materials will Mattel use in some of the 70th-anniversary-edition Matchbox models to support its commitment to sustainability?

Per Mattel, to support its commitment to sustainability it will use recycled zinc in some of the 70th-anniversary-edition Matchbox models.
  • Per the California-based toy company (which also makes Hot Wheels, Fisher-Price ride-on vehicles, Barbie dolls, and Uno playing cards), the celebratory line will include special 70th-anniversary die-cast vehicles featured in seven different assortments across the Matchbox line, all honoring the platinum anniversary with special platinum details. These selections are a combination of collector favorites and iconic vehicles spanning seven different decades and regions around the world.

“We are excited to celebrate the 70th anniversary of Matchbox and the trusted legacy this brand has imprinted on kids and collectors all over the world. We look forward to continuing to redefine the die-cast category as we move toward a more sustainable future,” said Mattel Senior Vice President and Global Head of Vehicles Roberto Stanichi.

Further, Mattel will celebrate its history while driving toward a better future by continuing its commitment to sustainability in the die-cast category. To support this commitment, a portion of the new 70th anniversary die-cast collection will be made from recycled zinc.

Additionally, Matchbox is committed to integrating more electric vehicles and eco-friendly themes into products with a vision to make all toys and packaging from 100 percent recycled, recyclable, or bio-based plastic materials by 2030.

Individual die-cast vehicles, Mattel explained, will be rolling into retail throughout the year and will be available throughout Matchbox’s 2023 die-cast product line.

There’s more in store for collectors and fans of the toy brand as Mattel added that the limited-edition line is just the first of the many ways that Matchbox will be celebrating its momentous achievement. More announcements are expected to be released in July 2023.
