MDPPA shares essential rainy season tips to riders

The Motorcycle Development Program Participants Association, Incorporated (MDPPA) has shared essential tips to help motorcycle riders be better prepared to hit the road for the rainy season.

Prompted by the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical, and Astronomical Services Administration’s (PAGASA) announcement that confirmed that the wet season has already started, the organization is eyeing to help motorcycle owners who will likely encounter slippery roads and reduced visibility.

Here are four key points that the MDPPA would like riders to remember during rainy days.

Invest in high-quality and appropriate gear

While it is important to buy conventional riding equipment like a helmet, it pays to invest in a high-quality riding jacket, pants, shoes, and gloves to keep oneself dry.

During light and heavy rains, riders can also wear reflectorized rain gear (raincoats and rain pants) for more visibility on the road.

Further, riders can also upgrade their helmets by investing in a helmet visor with an anti-fog insert to prevent fogging and maintain clearer vision.

Lastly, riders can also put on non-slip riding shoes that offer waterproof protection, breathability for the skin, and better traction on the motorcycle’s foot pegs, especially during wet weather conditions.

Remember the pre-ride inspection checklist

The pre-ride inspection checklist, per the MDPPA, is TCLOCS.

The acronym stands for Tires and wheels, Controls of the brakes or clutch levers, Lights and electricals, Oil and fluid level verification, Chassis, and Side stand and center stand examination.

Making sure to check the abovementioned before one rides under the rain can help provide additional peace of mind.

Plan ahead and avoid hazardous routes

Riders who simply cannot afford to wait for the rain to stop should consider planning their route ahead of time and avoiding hazardous areas.

Take advantage of the areas that are not prone to flooding, standing water, or poor drainage. If possible, use alternative thoroughfares with better conditions.

It is also best to increase one’s visibility on the road by wearing additional reflective gear or adding reflective strips to their motorcycle itself. 

Stay alert and focused

Finally, riding under heavy rain requires increased attentiveness. Those riding in these conditions should keep their eyes on the road ahead and anticipate potential hazards. They need to watch out for pedestrians, cyclists, and other motorists affected by the rain.

They should also bear in mind the three fundamentals of safe riding: recognize, judge, and react accurately. Most motor accidents can be avoided if only the rider has accurate recognition and does not commit an error in judgment.
