Dubbed as “the most efficient Mercedes-Benz ever built,” the Vision EQXX demonstrated a new level of efficiency by traveling from Stuttgart, Germany to Silverstone, UK all with a single charge.

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • What was the Vision EQXX's previous consumption record?

The Mercedes-Benz Vision EQXX previously traveled from Germany to France on a single charge where it set a 8.7kWh per 100km record.
  • What is the Mercedes-Benz Vision EQXX's most current consumption record?

In its most recent trip from Germany to the UK, the Vision EQXX clocked in at 8.3kWh per 100km.
  • For the 1,202-kilometer road trip, the Mercedes-Benz Vision EQXX clocked in at 8.3kWh per 100km.

“The journey continues — even further, even more efficient! Yet again, the Vision EQXX has proven that it can easily cover more than 1,000 km on a single battery charge, this time faced with a whole different set of real-world conditions. As Mercedes-Benz strives to go all-electric by 2030 wherever market conditions allow, it is important to show to the world what can be achieved in real terms through a combination of cutting-edge technology, teamwork, and determination,” said Mercedes-Benz Group Member of the Board of Management Markus Schäfer.

Key to the Vision EQXX’s superior range is the exceptional efficiency of its thermal drive. The all-electric vehicle had to endure summer temperatures of up to 30 degrees Celsius, paired with increased traffic density around Stuttgart and in the southeast of England. But despite the hot weather, the Vision EQXX’s electric drive unit maintained efficient temperature balance resulting in lower energy consumption.

Mercedes-Benz used a combination of innovative air-flow management and a cooling plate on the vehicle floor allowing the Vision EQXX to take advantage of the air flowing along its underside. This is, according to the German automotive brand, the most aerodynamically efficient way of keeping the electric drive unit cool under normal conditions.

The Mercedes-Benz Vision EQXX registered a total driving time of 14 hours and 30 minutes in over two days. During its 1,202-kilometer run, the electric car had an average speed of around 83kph and a maximum driving speed of 140kph.

“Driving this beacon of the future of electric mobility to the place where the Formula 1 story began, and where we’ve seen and contributed to some iconic Formula 1 races is personally very special. Completing the journey from Stuttgart to Silverstone on a single charge with even greater efficiency really evidences some great progress in accelerating the technologies underpinning our electrification strategy. The contribution made over the years by motorsports at Mercedes-Benz is significant and it makes us very proud,” said Mercedes High-Performance Powertrain Advanced Technology Director Adam Allsopp, who took over at the wheel for the final leg to Silverstone.

Upon arrival at Silverstone, the Vision EQXX still had some juice left. Formula E racing driver Nyck de Vries took it out for a spin on the tarmac and squeezed an 11-lap run.

“The Vision EQXX was a true pleasure to drive. I know what this team is capable of, and it was a real honor to drive such an amazing car on such a historic track,” said de Vries.

“And I can tell you that the interior is definitely a lot more luxurious than the cockpit of a Formula E car,” he added, with a smile.

The Mercedes-Benz Vision EQXX took on a similar feat last April when it drove from Stuttgart to Cassis (France). During the said trip, the efficient electric vehicle covered 1,008 kilometers and recorded an average consumption of 8.7kWh per 100km. Upon arrival in France, it had a remaining range of around 140 kilometers.

Its most recent adventure allowed the Mercedes-Benz Vision EQXX to break its own efficiency record giving it two successful 1,000 km+ road trips under its belt.
