MMC, DILG to create TWG to address public street parking woes

MMC Meeting

MANILA: The Metro Manila Council (MMC) and the Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) have agreed to create what the two agencies call a technical working group (TWG), which they hope will resolve the issues related to parking on public streets in the National Capital Region (NCR).

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • Where was the MMC meeting held?

The MMC meeting was held at the PNP Multi-Purpose Hall in Camp Crame in Quezon City.
  • Who were the officials that were present at the meeting?

Present at the gathering were MMDA Chairman Artes, DILG Secretary Remulla, and MMC President Zamora.
  • A meeting was held to discuss the worsening situation where the public streets in the metro are being used as parking spaces. Present in the said assembly were Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) Chairman Attorney Don Artes, DILG Secretary Jonvic Remulla, and re-elected MMC President San Juan City Mayor Francis Zamora.

The meeting was held at the Philippine National Police Multi-Purpose Hall in Camp Crame in Quezon City.

“The law says that public streets are not for public enterprise. We will now designate them as ‘no parking zones,’ especially those that affect Metro Manila's traffic,” Remulla explained suggesting that parking on all public streets between 5 a.m. and 10 p.m. should be prohibited.

On the other hand, Artes proposed that a scheduled “parking ban on all streets” be implemented. To align with the agency’s number coding scheme, the MMDA head recommended a time frame between 7 a.m. to 10 a.m. and 5 p.m. to 8 p.m.

“On the part of the MMDA, parking is absolutely prohibited on all major thoroughfares, including Mabuhay Lanes. This is non-negotiable for us,” Artes stressed.

The MMDA and DILG sought feedback and suggestions from the local chief executives of Metro Manila, and all parties agreed to form a TWG to further study the matter.

“We will come up with the final version on September 1. It will be a whole-of-city map — a work in progress,” said Remulla, assuring that the implementation will be done on a granular level.

“The intent is to make Metro Manila a more livable, cohesive, and safer place to live,” the DILG secretary added.
