MMDA mulls AI usage in traffic detection
MANILA: The Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) is eyeing to use artificial intelligence (AI) to bolster its traffic detection capabilities.
KEY TAKEAWAYS
How will the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority roll out the planned usage of artificial intelligence to bolster its traffic detection capabilities?
The agency is eyed to take advantage of the innovation using a video detector instead of the current ground loop detector. When is the agency planning to use the technology?
The MMDA is hoping that the innovation will be rolled out by next year.Projected to be conducted through an adaptive signaling system, the agency wants to take advantage of the innovation using a video detector instead of the current ground loop detector.
"As we phase in the adaptive signaling system, this innovation represents a major step towards ensuring smooth traffic flow, minimizing road crashes, and optimizing efficiency," MMDA Chairman Atty. Romando Artes shared.
The MMDA is hoping that the innovation will be rolled out by next year.
Per the MMDA Traffic Engineering Center (TEC), traffic signal systems with video detectors are less vulnerable to damage from roadworks, harsh weather, and physical interference. Since it will be designed with AI technology, it could capture additional information about vehicles such as speed, direction, and license plate numbers.
Further, the Artes also shared several videos showing the mismatch of the traffic signal countdown timers, drivers making split-decisions to speed through intersections, beating the red-light incidents, among others.
Recently, the agency removed traffic light countdown timers in 96 intersections along major thoroughfares in Metro Manila and replaced them with an adaptive signaling system that uses sensors. The decommissioning of the timers was carried out by the MMDA TEC.
