Nissan 2021 Sustainability Report: Driving innovation to enrich people’s lives

Nissan recently issued its 2021 Sustainability Report. The Japanese carmaker has released an annual sustainability report since 2004 which summarizes the company's approach and activities related to sustainability.

This year, Nissan aims to fulfill the corporate purpose of “driving innovation to enrich people’s lives.” To achieve this corporate purpose, Nissan promised to provide unique and innovative automotive products and services that deliver superior value.

In addition, Nissan seeks to create economic value and contribute to a cleaner, safer, and more sustainable mobility as well as the provision of related services.

"The products, technologies, and services that Nissan provides reach people all over the world, and we are connected to society in various ways. We are expected to address environmental and social issues, such as achieving carbon neutrality across our operations, preserving natural resources, and working to protect the human rights of people connected to our supply chain. Through innovation and sound business activities, Nissan will continue to respond by providing products and technologies that enrich people's lives, thereby aiming to provide solutions and contribute to the development of a sustainable society,” said Nissan President and CEO Makoto Uchida.

The report discussed environmental issues such as the company’s environmental policies and philosophy, climate change, air quality, resource dependency, and water scarcity.

A transcript of an interview with Nissan’s CEO was also included in the published report where Uchida answered questions regarding the company’s 2050 carbon neutrality plan, the shift in how consumers think, how the company aligns its goals to the United Nations’ Sustainability Development Goals (SDGs), and meeting their customer’s needs.
