Rolls-Royce mascot is now 112 years old

Rolls-Royce announced that the company’s mascot, the Spirit of Ecstasy, is now 112 years old.

According to the British automotive marque, the Rolls-Royce Spirit of Ecstasy was first registered as the firm’s intellectual property on February 6, 1911.

Since then, the Spirit of Ecstasy has been universally recognized, respected, and admired — with poise and grace that makes her a global icon.

The mascot, indeed, has come a long way. It has stood on the bonnet of various Rolls-Royce models and has had subtle changes in its appearance over the decades.

To note, Rolls-Royce updated the Spirit of Ecstasy just last year when it launched the Spectre electric vehicle.

“She’s changed with the passage of time. At various points in her long life she’s adopted different stances, sometimes stood slightly taller or shorter, and allowed the wind to sculpt her flowing garments in subtly altered forms,” Rolls-Royce said in a press release.

The Spirit of Ecstasy was created by illustrator and sculptor, Charles Sykes. Its backstory, Rolls-Royce explained, involved many of the foundational characters in the brand’s own history, including its first managing director, Claude Johnson.

To Rolls-Royce customers and fans around the world, the Spirit of Ecstasy personifies ambition, achievement, excellence, and success. It inspires greatness — every motor car on which she graces has to be worthy of her presence.
