WATCH: What It's Like to Drive a Halo-Equipped Formula 1 Car

A couple of weeks from now and the 2018 Formula 1 season kicks off with the Australian Grand Prix at the Melbourne Grand Prix Circuit in, well, Melbourne, Australia. As is typical every season, changes are made to the cars as per regulations and for the 2018 season, one of this is the use of a "halo," a wishbone-shaped device made of titanium that's designed to protect a driver's head from a crash or on-track debris. Just how much damage can the halo take? According to Mercedes-AMG Petronas Technical Director James Allison, a halo can take a load the equivalent of a London double-decker bus on it.

Now, you've probably wondered how Formula 1 drivers can see out of the cockpit with one column of the halo device positioned directly in front of them. Thankfully, Mercedes-AMG Petronas has given us a driver's view of what that's like exactly with Valtteri Bottas under the halo and behind the wheel.
