Audi R8 Spyder Review
Audi R8 Spyder Overview
The Audi R8 is back with a major sporty redesign and a more powerful driving performance.
The Audi R8 is one of the German carmaker’s most successful coupes. This time, the vehicle will be available as a top-down dubbed “Spyder”, making it look even more like a supercar. Audi has done away with the R8’s previous subtle design and created what is probably their most aggressive-looking model to date. The goal of the Sypder is to bring a ton more attitude to the game compared to the likes of the McLaren 570S and the Mercedes-AMG GT R. It’s definitely a bold move considering that this is the second generation of the R8. Drivers who are looking to upgrade from the previous R8 can expect a whole lot of grille up front as well as a powerful V10 engine that will give you an exhilarating driving experience.
Audi R8 Spyder Interior
The inside of the R8 Spyder has also been given a major facelift to match its larger-than-life attitude. The upholstery is in complete quilted leather and the seats are all power-adjustable. The dashboard is driver-oriented with all features designed to be closer and within reach to the driver’s seat. While the seats are positioned low, visibility is still excellent. And thanks to Audi’s signature virtual cockpit, everything needed is right behind the steering wheel. One thing to keep in mind is that because it is a top-down coupe, it can only seat two people--driver included. Additional features include automatic climate control, rain-sensing wipers, and automatic headlamps.
Audi R8 Spyder Exterior
Audi did a major overhaul with the R8 Spyder’s exterior design. Everything about the second generation model is bigger. The front of the vehicle is the most noticeable and eye-catching thanks to its incredibly wide grille. So wide, in fact, that it almost barely had any room for its razor-sharp LED headlamps. In addition to that, there are also some new extra intakes and fins. On the rear can also be found a wide grille as well as a rear diffuser that has been moved higher up on the bumper. It now wraps around the now much larger and cleaner oval tailpipes which replaced the previous oblong ones. The engine bay vent also stretches along the entire rear of the body. To top it all off are 20-inch alloy wheels that complete its flashy appearance.
Audi R8 Spyder Ride & Handling
The vehicle is now supplemented with an impressive soundscape thanks to its oval tailpipe trims, allowing the vehicle a smooth and powerful roar when accelerating. This makes zooming through highways give the driver a sense of limitless freedom. Audi has also included its signature Quattro all-wheel-drive system. In addition to that, the suspension is incredibly sophisticated which promises a spirited drive.
Audi R8 Spyder Engine & Fuel Consumption
The R8 Spyder is a beast of a vehicle. There are two available variants: the V10 and the V10 Plus. The V10 variant is powered by 5.2-litre V10 FSI engine with the capability to churn out 540 hp and 529 Nm of torque. On the other hand, the V10 Plus is capable of generating 610 hp. Both are mated to a 7-speed automatic gearbox. The original R8 coupe can go from 0-100 kph in just 3.4 seconds, but the Spyder is apparently a tenth slower according to Audi. That means it can reach 100 kph in 3.6 seconds and 3.3 seconds when in top-down mode. However, it is capable of reaching top speeds of 312 to 328 kph which is pretty impressive for a top-down. If you still want an Audi R8, the R8 V10 Performance model is significantly faster.
Audi R8 Spyder Braking & Safety
The R8 Spyder is equipped with a complete set of driver, side, and passenger airbags. It has the standard Anti-Lock Braking System with Electronic Brake Distribution, as well as Brake Assist, engine immobilizer, parking sensors, a tyre pressure monitor, and crash sensors.
Audi R8 Spyder Verdict
Audi definitely did not hold back with the R8 Spyder. While the original was based on the classic Lamborghini Gallardo, the current second-generation model is built instead on the Lamborghini Huracan platform. This premium vehicle is a scene-stealer thanks to its new aggressive design, its powerful performance, and its new top-down feature. For anyone looking to impress, this vehicle definitely demands your attention.
The price for the Audi R8 Spyder starts at P17.8 million.
