The 11th Philippine Electric Vehicle Summit (PEVS) will be themed “Plug-in and Accelerate,” the Electric Vehicle Association of the Philippines (EVAP) revealed.

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • How many electric vehicles (EV) were sold in the Philippines in 2022?

Per the Electric Vehicle Association of the Philippines (EVAP), there were 1,013 EVs sold in the country last year.
  • Where will EVAP stage the 11th Philippine Electric Vehicle Summit (PEVS)?

Per EVAP, the 11th PEVS will be staged at the SMX Convention Center in Pasay City from October 19 to 20.
  • Reflecting the aggressiveness of the electric vehicle (EV) sector after the implementation of the Electric Vehicle Industry Development Act (EVIDA), the theme mirrors the current status of the segment in the country.

The EVIDA law, for those who do not know, incentivizes EV adoption nationwide through the allocation of dedicated parking slots in establishments, the assignment of green routes across cities and municipalities, and the exemption of electric and hybrid vehicles from traffic coding schemes.

Attesting to the said growth of EVs in the Philippines are numbers gathered by Statista — a statistics portal.

Per the said study, the sales of electric vehicles in the archipelago showed an upward trajectory, which began with 378 vehicles sold in 2020, 843 vehicles handed over in 2021, and 1,013 delivered in 2022.

Various government agencies are also taking part in the steady push for EVs.

According to EVAP, the Department of Energy (DOE) is setting the pace in the government sector by rolling out necessary programs aligned with the law pertaining to renewable energy sources. Projects like the Comprehensive Roadmap for the Electric Vehicle Industry, Vehicle Fuel Economy Labeling Program, and the Fuel Economy Performance Rating, are just examples of the initiatives by the agency.

Additionally, EVAP said that the Department of Trade and Industry is preparing its Electric Vehicle Incentive Strategy while the Department of Transportation is keeping its focus on public utility vehicle modernization, with EV as the priority.

EVAP also pointed out that other government agencies are taking their share by including EVs into their fleets like the Department of Public Works and Highways.

To recall, the Land Transportation Office also said that it is open to the idea of providing EVs with special plates, which might further stimulate EV adoption in the country

    Edmund Araga

“The EV industry is still making necessary adjustments in terms of supplies and infrastructures. Transitions are on the way in terms of regulations being set by different government agencies involved,” EVAP President Edmund Araga said in a press release.

Filipino motorists, car buyers, and modern car enthusiasts can get to better see and understand the acceleration of the local EV segment at PEVS 2023. It will be held from October 19 to 20 at the SMX Convention Center in Pasay City.

The event will be organized and hosted by EVAP with the Manila Electric Company and in partnership with the DOE and Nissan Philippines, Inc.

“Not to be missed is the establishment of the Philippine Battery Consortium, which will be launched during PEVS 2023. It is aimed at addressing the important concerns and issues about battery supplies and costs. Of course, the three-day event will be a bigger venue for networking as well as for plenary and moderated discussions, which everyone would surely find helpful,” Araga concluded.
