2020 Toyota GR Supra Goes on Sale This July

Back in January, the fifth-generation Toyota GR Supra made its world debut at the North American International Auto Show, finally putting to rest years of rumors and speculation among sports car enthusiasts around the world. The buzz generated by the launch certainly generated ripples all over, which led to the first production model nabbing USD2.1 million at auction.

Now, Toyota GAZOO Racing, the racing outfit behind the GR Supra's current iteration, announced that the 2020 model will go on sale beginning July 22 this year.

The 2020 Toyota GR Supra will be available in two grades--3.0 and 3.0 Premium--with the addition of a special Launch Edition based on the 3.0 Premium grade.

The car's fifth generation boasts a precise and agile rear-wheel-drive design that pays homage to Toyota's racing heritage, particularly the 1967 2000 GT and 1993-2002 Supra. Despite some throwback design elements, the 2020 Supra has its sights on the future, imbued with cutting-edge powertrain, chassis and multimedia technology.

The all-new Supra houses a 3.0-liter, turbocharged inline-six that produces 335 hp and 495 Nm. The torque particularly comes on strong even at low speeds, due to the twin-scroll turbocharger, direct fuel injection and continuously variable timing on both the intake and exhaust camshafts. Standard active differential and adaptive suspension further raise the GR Supra's ride and handling to exceptional levels.

The eight-speed automatic transmission is controlled by paddle shifters that provide manual control when desired. Two driving modes--Normal and Sport--allow the driver to modify throttle response steering weight and transmission shifting to enhance performance. The car delivers a 0-100 kph acceleration of 4.2 seconds, effectively making it the quickest Toyota-branded production vehicle yet.

The first 1,500 production Supras will consist of Launch Edition models, and are all reserved for the North American automotive market. These will feature an individually-numbered carbon-fiber badge on the passenger-side dashboard complete with a graphic of Toyota Motor Corporation President and Master Driver Akio Toyoda's signature. As for pricing, the 3.0 will cost USD49,990 (around PHP2.62 million), the 3.0 Premium USD53,990 (around PHP2.831 million), and the Launch Edition USD 55,250 (around PHP2.891 million).
