All-new MG4 Electric breaks cover

Morris Garages (MG) has unveiled the latest iteration of its MG4 Electric hatchback.

The new MG4 Electric is fitted with 51 kilowatt-hour (kWh) and 64kWh batteries that boast an all-electric range of up to 350 and 450 kilometers, respectively.

In terms of power, the 64kWh-equipped model can put out as much as 201 horsepower with a top speed of 160 kilometers per hour (kph). Acceleration from a standstill to 100kph is achieved in under eight seconds.

Additionally, the Shanghai Automotive Industry Corporation (SAIC)-owned brand said that the new MG4 Electric is the first MG model built on the new intelligent Modular Scalable Platform (MSP), which prepares the electric vehicle (EV) for the implementation of future technologies.

MG cited that the MSP allows the EV hatchback’s highly efficient electronic drive unit to be upgraded from 400 volts (V) to 800V, to charge the battery even faster in the future.

Also, the powertrain is able to support future BaaS (Battery as a Service) battery swap systems while the integrated service-oriented architecture enables vehicles to receive over-the-air updates throughout their lifecycle.

The latest version of the MG4 Electric also benefits from the SAIC-developed “One Pack” battery design. Through the said battery technology, the MG4 Electric enjoys three major advantages, namely ultra-high integration, ultra-long life, and “zero thermal runaway” safety protection.

“In the ‘One Pack’ battery system developed by SAIC Motor, the projection area of all batteries on the MSP is the same; the connectors related to other components are also the same. Under this design concept, theoretically, batteries ranging from 40kWh to 150kWh can be easily achieved. It can meet the energy requirements of the A0 to D-class models, providing users with flexible and diverse choices. Users can buy a small battery first, and then replace and upgrade when a longer range is needed,” commented SAIC Motor Deputy Chief Engineer Zhu Jun.
