DOTr amends traffic violation settlement period to 15 working days

MANILA: Drivers who have been cited for traffic violations may settle their charges within 15 working days instead of the customary calendar days.

This was the announcement of the Department of Transportation (DOTr) on social media based on the memorandum circular issued by Transportation Secretary Giovanni Lopez.

Per DOTR, the new lead time from 15 calendar days to 15 working days is meant to “afford both the government and the public sufficient time to resolve cases.”

“Ibig sabihin po nito, hindi kasama ‘yung mga holiday at long weekend sa bilang ng araw kapag magse-settle ng violation ‘yung driver ("This means that holidays and long weekends are not included in the number of days when the driver settles a violation),” Lopez was quoted as saying.

Relatedly, the agency also said that the confiscation of driver’s licenses in apprehension cases involving traffic violations must be suspended immediately.

The directive, the agency mentioned, is in accordance with President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.’s instruction to streamline and clarify procedures in apprehending erring motorists whose driver’s licenses have been seized.

While the confiscation has been suspended, the license of the traffic violator will be under alert. Should the subject fail to settle the case within the new lead time, his or her license will be automatically suspended or revoked.
