Ford revealed the next-generation Territory at the Manila International Auto Show 2023 just a few days ago. Its arrival heralds a new era for the iconic nameplate with a more aggressive look and a more powerful setup.

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • What powers the old Ford Territory?

The old Ford Territory is powered by a 1.5-liter Ecoboost engine mated to a continuously variable transmission. It makes 141 horsepower (hp) and 225 Newton-meters of torque.
  • What powers the next-gen Ford Territory?

The next-gen Ford Territory gets is power from a 1.5-liter Ecoboost engine mated to a seven-speed automatic. This setup produces 157hp and 248Nm of torque.
  • Interested to see just how much of an improvement the next-generation Ford Territory has over the outgoing model? Stick with us to find out.

    Exterior

One of the biggest changes to the nameplate is its size. The old Ford Territory measures 4,580 millimeters (mm) long, 1,936mm wide, and 1,674mm tall. It has a 2,716mm wheelbase and 180mm of ground clearance.

As for the next-generation Ford Territory, it has an overall length of 4,630mm, an overall width of 1,935mm, and an overall height of 1,706mm. Its overall wheelbase is 2726mm and its minimum ground clearance is 190mm.

Further, the next generation Ford Territory sports some new exterior appointments like its scale-like grille, its sharper-looking LED daytime running lamps (DRL), and its active cornering headlamps.

At the rear, the next-gen Ford Territory also sports new features like its LED taillamps, which look like a shrunken-down version of what’s found on the next-gen Ford Everest. The third brake lamp is also now hidden underneath the roof-integrated spoiler and the rear diffuser looks more tamed than before.

Overall, the looks and the size of the next-gen Ford Territory would appeal to most of today’s car buyers as it makes the compact crossover look more aggressive and modern. With that said, this round goes to the next-generation Ford Territory.

    Interior

The previous Ford Territory still offers decent interior amenities, even by today’s standards. The range-topping model comes with a 10-inch fully digital instrument cluster with three selectable displays and a 10-inch touchscreen infotainment system with wireless Apple Carplay and wired Android Auto.

Occupants can enjoy its perforated leather seats, leather-wrapped steering wheel, and leather-covered central console. A panoramic moonroof is standard for all variants.

Meanwhile, Ford introduced a seamless dashboard display in the next-gen Territory. A long screen combines a 12-inch instrument cluster and a 12-inch touchscreen infotainment screen with wireless Apple CarPlay and wireless Android Auto.

And while on the topic of wireless features, the next-generation Ford Territory also flaunts a wireless charging dock.

Further, the top-of-the-line next-gen Ford Territory comes with perforated leather seats, a leather steering wheel, and an armrest finished in leather. The panoramic moonroof is only available for the top-tier trim.

For this round, we’re going to give the win yet again to the next-generation Ford Territory. Its more modern cabin will easily convince car buyers to drive this compact crossover home.

    Engine

Ford gave the old Territory its 1.5-liter Ecoboost gasoline-fed powerplant. Mated to a continuously variable transmission with Sport Mode, the engine makes 141 horsepower (hp) and 225 Newton-meters of torque.

The new kid in town, while being fitted with a similarly-sized mill, makes more power at 157hp. It also reflected a rise increase in pulling power at 248Nm of torque.

Since both the old and the new Ford Territory are neck and neck in this round, we’re calling it to the new Territory's advantage.

    Safety

Safety-wise, the outgoing Ford Territory’s top-grade model gets autonomous emergency braking, adaptive cruise control with forward collision warning, lane departure warning, a blind spot information system with parallel and perpendicular parking assist, an anti-lock braking system (ABS), electronic brake-force distribution, and electronic stability control, to name a few.

As for the next-generation vsersion, it comes with a door-opening collision warning system, a blind spot information system with rear cross-traffic alert, adaptive cruise control with a stop-and-go function, autonomous emergency braking with pedestrian detection, lane keeping aid, and lane departure warning, among others.

The next-generation Ford Territory slightly edges its previous iteration thanks to the slightly modern suite of safety features. Because of that, this round goes to the next-generation Ford Territory.

    Verdict

The victor of this battle is clearly the next-generation Ford Territory.

The carmaker did a great job of updating the compact crossover’s looks, performance, and safety features, allowing owners to really feel that they are driving a next-generation vehicle.
