Audi RS 5 Avant PHEV officially enters PH

MANILA: Audi Philippines has unveiled the RS 5 Avant plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) for the local market. 

The said model, which comes in a wagon (Avant) body style, is the German carmaker’s maiden example of a high-performance PHEV. Additionally, Audi says that it was designed and engineered to have true “RS” lineage, promising a fun, peppy ride that is comfortable enough to function as a daily driver. 

Powertrain

Under the hood of the Audi RS5 Avant PHEV is a 2.9-liter TFSI V6 gasoline engine paired with a PHEV system, a quattro permanent all-wheel-drive system, an eight-speed Tiptronic transmission, and a self-locking center differential.

At most, the Audi-made PHEV nameplate can generate up to 639 horsepower (hp) and 825 Newton-meters (Nm) of torque. It also has an 83-kilometer electric-only range. With this, the model has an on-paper top speed of 285 kilometers per hour (kph).

Handling stability and ride quality are provided by an RS-spec suspension system with controlled two-valve dampers. The all-new RS5 Avant PHEV also has an RS-specific exhaust system, as well as ventilated steel disc rotors and RS-branded brake calipers.

Exterior

On the outside, the Audi RS5 Avant PHEV stands out with its wide-body treatment and aggressive track widths, complemented by numerous functional aerodynamic components. These include functional air curtains, large air intakes positioned on both sides of the grille, a roof-mounted spoiler, and a substantial rear diffuser.

The rear diffuser also frames a functional dual-tailpipe exhaust system, or RS exhaust. Further enhancing the model’s exterior are 21-inch cast-aluminum wheels, OLED taillights, darkened Matrix LED headlamps, and roof rails.

The RS5 Avant PHEV is likewise equipped with a panoramic sunroof, power-folding and adjustable side mirrors with memory function, and a headlight cleaning system.

Interior

For its interior, the Audi RS 5 Avant PHEV comes with a five-seater layout with a driver-centric cockpit. 

Notable features that enhance this model’s driving experience are a three-spoke flat-bottom steering wheel with paddle shifters, the Audi Virtual Cockpit Plus, a head-up display, an auto-dimming rearview mirror, and sport seats. The driver’s seat is also power-adjustable, while all seats are upholstered, but only the front seats get a massage and ventilation function and a pneumatically adjustable lumbar support system. 

Cooling everyone inside the PHEV model is a triple-zone automatic climate control system, while mood inside the vehicle is enhanced by the Audi Ambient Lighting Package Pro. 

The model’s main display is a 14.5-inch touchscreen that is connected to its digital gauge cluster. Connectivity is provided by wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, while sound is outputted by a  Bang & Olufsen 3D speaker set. 

Safety

For safety, the Audi RS 5 Avant PHEV utilizes a mix of active and passive gear. For its passive kit, the model has dual front airbags, side airbags, a head airbag, and a front interaction airbag. These are complemented by an electronic engine immobilizer, tire pressure monitoring, anti-lock braking, and electronic stability control, among others. 

Its active safety components, on the other hand, consist of the following:

• Emergency brake assist front and rear
• Lane departure warning with emergency assist

Notably, the reservation period for the PHEV wagon nameplate has already started, while its stock will arrive in the country in the fourth quarter. Also, the Audi distributor shared that a sedan version will also be launched in the market soon.
