Ginetta Premieres 600-HP Ginetta Akula in Geneva

British car manufacturer Ginetta finally has a name for the supercar it teased ahead of the Geneva Motor Show, and it's as beastly as the car looks to be. The all-new model is dubbed the Akula, and will cost GBP340,000 (USD447,000) in its home country, according to chairman Lawrence Tomlinson.

'Akula' means 'shark' in Russian, and is also coincidentally a name for a type of attack submarine. The show car, which is displayed in Typhoon Black, is slated for production in 2020.

The supercar features a custom carbon fiber tub and Ginetta's own 6.0-liter naturally-aspirated V8, boasting a billet aluminum block and forged components. Ginetta describes the engine placement as 'mid-mid mount' meaning it is located behind the front axle and in front of the driver.  Paired with a six-speed sequential gearbox, the powertrain is said to deliver 600 hp and 700 Nm of torque, but the exact numbers and rpm range points are yet to be revealed.

Aggressive styling and race-inspired aerodynamics yield a downforce of 376 kg at 161 kph, which is only five percent lower than the capabilities of Ginetta's LMP3 racing car. The suspension has also been tweaked for the tracks, with pushrod-actuated strings and dampers linked to double-wishbone arms all around. Carbon-ceramic brakes and center-lock wheels round up the package.

Designed to be as light as possible, the car's dry weight is estimated at a very low 1150 kg. The car's exotic carbon body, sculpted with the help of Ginetta's racing pedigree, helps greatly in this area. As a result, the Akula's power-to-weight ratio stands at over 550 hp per ton (1 percent higher than previously reported), while the distribution of mass is an enviable 49 percent at the front and 51 percent at the rear.

As for features that help the Akula be road-legal, these include hydraulic steering, traction control, anti-lock braking, rearview camera, parking sensors, wireless phone charging, and probably most impressive of all, a 675-liter trunk space.

Only 20 Akulas will be built, with 14 already spoken for--that's two more units sold since the car was teased. Confirmed owners are fitted to a seat for their car to ensure utmost comfort. They are also invited to test drive their purchase on a race track and guided through "a bespoke specification program with myriad configuration options available."
