Honda joins alliance focused on biodiversity

30 by 30 Alliance

Honda Motor Co., Ltd. announced that it has joined the 30 by 30 Alliance for Biodiversity, an organization that advocates environment preservation.

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • What is the 30 by 30 Alliance for Biodiversity?

The 30 by 30 Alliance is a coalition to develop structures and systems that will help attain the 30 by 30 targets in Japan.
  • What is the 30 by 30 international goal?

The target is is to conserve and protect at least 30 percent of Earth’s land and oceans by 2030.
  • The 30 by 30 international goal is to conserve and protect at least 30 percent of Earth’s land and ocean by 2030.

To note, the 30 by 30 Alliance was created as a coalition of governments that include the Japanese Ministry of the Environment, businesses and non-profit organizations, to develop structures and systems that will help attain the 30 by 30 targets in Japan.

According to the Japanese automaker, it will proactively participate in the initiatives of the Alliance that will help increase protected areas.

Apart from that, Honda said that the 30 by 30 Alliance will also "work to designate, manage and promote the conservation of areas that are achieving the effective in-situ conservation of biodiversity outside of protected areas (OECM)”, which covers Satochi-Satoyama (traditional Japanese landscape) and corporate-owned forests.

Since the 1960s, the vehicle manufacturer has been conducting activities pertaining to the conservation of biodiversity, like afforestation and the recycling and reuse of industrial water at its factories.

By 1976, Honda launched a program to create a “hometown forest,” a forest of native tree species that safeguards the ecosystem unique to each location, at each of its sites in Japan.

Today, Honda operations in Japan already made several environmental conservation events — in collaboration with local governments and communities in their respective regions — to protect the environment, that involves Satochi-Satoyama and forests, along with its original environmental conservation projects such as the HondaWoods, HelloWoods, and Honda Beach Clean.

In 2011, the automotive manufacturer created the following activities under “Honda Biodiversity Guidelines:"

    • development of environmental technology
    • initiatives based on corporate activities
    • cooperation with communities
    • disclosure and sharing of information

Moreover, the automaker vowed to continue its proactive commitment to the activities, which will ensure the company’s vision for the joys of the next generation.
