Japanese automakers are busy one-upping the other as the date for the Tokyo Motor Show draws near. After Mitsubishi earlier this month, it's Mazda's turn to drop a hint, releasing a 15-second clip--the third in the series--for its upcoming all-electric crossover coupe.
Unfortunately, all that we're treated to is a silhouette, along with a brief view of the hood and side panel.
Instead of being a version of an existing model as previously rumored, the vehicle will be a completely new car, wedged between the CX-5 and CX-3, which means it will be similar in size to more established EVs such as the Chevrolet Bolt, Hyundai Kona, and Nissan Leaf e+.
Mazda also notes that the platform used for the EV follows the brand's new SkyActiv Vehicle Architecture--the same one used in the latest Mazda 3. The single-motor 35.5kWh battery powertrain is rated at 142 hp and 264 Nm, with a possible range of 200 to 225 kms.
Sales of the Mazda electric SUV are due to start in 2020, beginning in advanced EV markets like China, Europe, and Japan.
Though the coming EV is not its first electric vehicle (it’s actually the fourth), it will be the first to be mass-produced. The first one, Mazda Demio, was meant solely for the Japanese market, while the other two were prototypes.
