KEY TAKEAWAYS
How many tests does the Green New Car Assessment Program (NCAP) have to assess new vehicles?
Green NCAP has three categories to assess new vehicles like the Nissan Ariya. What rating did the Nissan Ariya score in the Clean Air Index category?
The Nissan Ariya scored “good” ratings in all of the tests in the Clean Air Index category. After achieving near-perfect scores from Green NCAP’s three test categories, Nissan’s electric vehicle (EV) has been honored with the highest possible rating from the environmentally-inclined non-profit organization.
The three categories are Clean Air Index, Energy Efficiency Index, and Greenhouse Gas Index, of which, the Nissan Ariya scored 10 out of 10, 9.3 out of 10, and 9.5 out of 10 respectively.
“At Nissan, we are deeply committed to our sustainability and electrification goals as outlined in Ambition 2030. It is wonderful that Green NCAP has recognized the Ariya as being at the forefront of this eco-revolution. We are so proud of everyone across the team who has worked tirelessly to accomplish this achievement,” commented Nissan Africa, Middle East, India, Europe, and Oceania Product Strategy and Pricing Region Vice President Arnaud Charpentier.
Green NCAP’s Clean Air Index is made up of two parts, which subject vehicles like the Nissan Ariya to laboratory and road tests. Of the two, the all-electric automobile achieved a “good” rating on all evaluations.
For Energy Efficiency Index, Green NCAP put the Nissan Ariya in a series of lab tests where the EV crossover earned equal “good” and “adequate” ratings.
Similarly, the Nissan Ariya earned equal “good” and “adequate” scores in the Greenhouse Gas Index.
“The Ariya is a next-generation electric vehicle from Nissan. The large battery enables the two-ton vehicle to drive more than 500 km (kilometers) according to the WLTP (Worldwide Harmonised Light Vehicle Test Procedure) procedure. With the high consumption measured in Green NCAP’s Cold Ambient Test, a range of 313 km can be covered, starting with a full battery; in the Highway Test, the value is 349 km. When charging with 11 kW (kilowatts), 91.6 percent of the energy taken from the electricity grid is available at the battery's output side — this is the highest value measured by Green NCAP so far and addresses an important aspect of sustainability and users’ costs. During a full discharge, the battery is able to deliver 89.6 kWh (kilowatt-hours) of usable energy, which is more than the officially declared 87 kWh. The Nissan Ariya confidently reaches an Average Score of 96 percent and five Green stars,” Green NCAP wrote in a press release.
