Pininfarina PF0 Hyper GT Powertrain Outsourced to Rimac

After finally revealing its much-hyped PF0 hyper GT during Monterey Car Week back in August, Automobili Pinifarina has now released further information about its limited-edition racer (only 50 were sold to the US market). In a report, the coach-builder-turned-supercar-manufacturer admitted that it had Croatia's Rimac Automobili supply the PF0's electric motor and battery tech.

Company CEO Michael Perschke said having Rimac's growing list of clients include most of the competitors, and Porsche buying a stake in the Croatian firm, made a convincing case for the company to tap Rimac’s resources. Rimac worked on the PF0 drive system with the Mahindra Racing Formula E team.

Indian company Mahindra has reportedly invested an initial USD100 million in Pininfarina so  it can proceed with its expansion into car manufacturing, with a planned spend of USD446.5 million over the next five years.

Final output numbers for the Rimac-built powertrain stands at 1,900 hp and 2,305 Nm of torque, and will have a zero-to-100 kph acceleration time of less than two seconds, 400 kph-plus top speed, provide a potential zero emissions range of over 480-plus kilometers. Pininfarina added that the batteries are located behind the passenger compartment to keep the batteries behind the wheels. A peculiar choice, as experts are saying it could affect the car's center of gravity.

To move forward with its expansion plans, the Italian company "pirated" from fellow supercar makers, obtaining Christian Jung from Porsche and Peter Tutzer from Pagani Zonda. Jung now acts as Pininfarina’s Chief Technology Officer while Tutzer has signed on as Senior Technical Advisor.

After the PF0, Pininfarina plans to release three SUVs in the next five years, one of which will have 940 hp so it can compete with the Lamborghini Urus. All three SUVs will use the same modular platform and drivetrain.
