The repair works costs 84.7 million. What are the major repair works that will be done in the iconic bridge?
The repair works include tightening of high-tension bolts and painting works on structural steel. In a statement, the repair for the structure that interlinks the islands of Leyte and Samar is being done to ensure its structural integrity.
DPWH Secretary Manuel Bonoan — citing the report submitted by DPWH Region 8 Director Allan Borromeo — said that the rehabilitation works cost P84.7 million.
Borromeo said that the repair would ensure the safety of motorists and other daily road users since the infrastructure is nearly 50 years old. The program involves the tightening of high-tension bolts and painting works on structural steel.
Earlier, the DPWH Bureau of Design and Bureau of Research and Standards have earlier conducted an evaluation which involved non-destructive testing (NDT) for detailed bridge condition, corrosion inspection, and monitoring of bridge steel members.
“NDT testing is done to check the compressive strength and other properties of concrete from the existing structure, establish baseline structural condition, and to identify any existing problem that may cause problems in the future,” Borromeo explained.
The rehabilitation program for the San Juanico Bridge (which is implemented by DPWH Region 8) is expected to be completed before the year ends.
