KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • By how much will toll rates rise?

The NLEX Corporation said that the new toll rate reflects an increase of P0.78 per kilometer.
  • Who approved the increase?

The Toll Regulatory Board approved the new toll fees.
  • The tollway operator shared that the adjustment, which will be implemented starting Wednesday (June 1), follows the Toll Regulatory Board (TRB) approval.

In a statement, the NLEX Corporation said that the toll hike, which “followed regulatory procedures and underwent thorough review”, confirms the periodic rate adjustments due in 2017.

Under the latest toll fee matrix, motorists driving Class 1 vehicles traveling between Mabalacat City to Tarlac will be charged an additional P31. Those using Class 2 vehicles on the same route will pay an added P61 while Class 3 vehicles will be charged with an extra P92.

Meanwhile, motorists driving Class 1, 2, and 3 vehicles, will pay an extra P49, P98, and P147, respectively when they travel between Mabalacat City and Tipo, Hermosa, Bataan (near Subic Freeport) starting the aforementioned date.

However, the NLEX Corporation said that public utility buses (PUB) will be given toll subsidies and allow them to continue to enjoy the old rates for the next three months to help them cope with the adjustment.

The state-owned Bases Conversion and Development Authority (BCDA) turned over the management, operations and maintenance of the four-lane 93.7-kilometer expressway was awarded to NLEX Corporation in 2015. The expressway, which was partly funded by the Japan Bank for International Cooperation (JBIC), was opened to the public in 2008.

Earlier, the NLEX Corporation jacked up the toll rates for North Luzon Expressway with an additional P2 in the open system and P0.34 per kilometer in the closed system.
