Suzuki to use more renewable energy at manufacturing facilities in India

As part of its plans to be carbon-neutral, Suzuki has added another automobile facility in India that utilizes electricity coming from renewable energy sources.

The company said that last month, Suzuki Motor Gujarat Private Limited (SMG) — its subsidiary in India — became the first firm under the Japanese automotive manufacturer to procure electricity from renewable energy sources through an off-site corporate power purchase agreement.

The power generation facilities from where SMG buys the electricity, Suzuki said in a statement, are installed outside SMG premises. 

A hybrid of wind and solar power, the power generation facility — with a generation output of 17.6MW — was installed by ReNew Power Private Limited exclusively for SMG.

The latest initiative could help SMG reduce carbon dioxide emissions by approximately 59,000 tons per year.

“Plus, the solar power generation facility installed by SMG on its premises in 2018 generates 0.5MW,” the company noted.

To note, Maruti Suzuki India Limited (MSIL) has been using electricity from renewable energy sources since 2014, which utilizes a solar power generation facility that can be found at its Manesar Plant. It was expanded in September 2021 and can now provide up to 26.3 MW. With the extension, MSIL is targeting to cut down emissions by around 20,000 tons annually.

In the mid-term management plan, Suzuki is eyeing to reach zero emissions from production in 2050. “We will continue to reduce CO2 emissions by expanding the use of renewable energy, promoting energy conservation, and implementing daily improvement activities,” Suzuki ended.
