Acura bids farewell to NSX with limited-edition Type S

Acura gave a sneak peek at the NSX Type S, a limited-edition and a high-performance send-off to the NSX hybrid sports car nameplate. 

The final NSX cars produced at Honda's Performance Manufacturing Center in Ohio, USA will be a Type S model, powered by an enhanced version of the supercar's twin-turbo V6 and Sport Hybrid All-Wheel Drive (SH-AWD) system, Acura said. 

Only 350 NSX Type S examples will be available worldwide, and the USA will get a larger chunk of those cars with 300 cars allotted for that market. Lucky customers can get their hands on those 300 starting August 12, after the Type S makes an appearance at the Monterey Car Week. 

Launched in 2016, this second-generation NSX, also known as the Honda NSX in Japan and other markets, was "the first supercar to utilize three electric motors to enhance all aspects of the driving experience."

With those e-motors paired to a lithium-ion battery and a mid-mounted twin-turbo 3.5-liter V6, the resulting power and torque outputs were 573hp and 645Nm of torque. 

And the generous power and torque are sent to all four wheels, to result in the NSX's zero-to-100kph time of 2.7 seconds and a top speed of 310kph. It's safe to expect higher performance figures from the "enhanced version" of the powertrain.  

The "NSX introduced multiple industry firsts including the use ablation casting in the supercar's multi-material space frame, as well as the world's first and only production nine-speed Dual Clutch Transmission (DCT) for a passenger automobile," Acura claimed. 

Acura will release more of the NSX Type S' photos, specs, and pricing upon the car's launch. So judging from the teaser photos, the NSX Type S appears to be wearing a matte gray finish on its body and wheels, and red details on its engine bay. What is only certain is the fitment of the Type S badge of honor.

The second-generation NSX has dominated on the racetrack, with the NSX GT3 Evo winning the 2019 and 2020 IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship titles, and the 2019 Super GT driver's and manufacturer's championships in the GT300 class in Japan, Honda said.

The NSX also currently holds the hybrid record in the Time Attack 1 division of the Broadmoor Pikes Peak International Hill Climb set in 2020, and the production vehicle record at the Grand Prix of Long Beach street circuit set in 2019. 

What's more, the NSX garnered various performance car of the year awards from motoring publications in the US. 

"While the NSX is celebrating its final year of production, Acura will continue to pursue sports cars in the electrified era," the American luxury brand of Honda said in a statement.

And so based on that piece of information, here's wishful thinking that we might get to see an electric NSX in the near future.
