It's a bit late to the crossover party, but the Volkswagen T-Cross brings with it funky looks and colors, an attractive features list, and impressive safety credentials.
The T-Cross can be finished in Polar White, Chinchilla Gray for the entry-level S, while the higher SE-exclusive hues are Syringa Violet, Romance Red, and Tribu. For the SE, colors of its body continue onto the interior trims.
Along with an eight- (S) and nine-inch (SE) infotainment screen, the T-Cross adds USB ports in the front and rear, and safety features such as rear park distance control, tire pressure monitor, and electronic stability program.
Sitting on the Volkswagen Group's MQB platform, it was rated five stars at the European New Car Assessment Program back in 2019. The MQB platform is also used in the Audi A1 and Volkswagen Polo.
With prices from P1.098 million for the S trim, and P1.198 million for the SE, the T-Cross has some interesting alternatives.
Hyundai Venue 1.6 GLS (P985,000)
Introduced in the local market without much fanfare, the Venue is also a quirkily styled and colored crossover, which packs the same level of features and safety tech for much less.
The Hyundai Venue feature a light cluster shaped like a letter Z in its tail lamps, and the 17-inch wheels with asymmetrical spoke design is exclusive to the top-trim GLS.
Inside, driver and passenger can use an eight-inch audio infotainment system. compatible with Android Auto and Apple Carplay. When backing up, the display doubles as a rearview camera.
The Venue GLS' safety features include six airbags, Electronic Stability Control (ESC), and Isofix child seat anchors.
The mid-spec Seltos allows for some driver involvement with the Drive Mode Select feature in its transmission. The feature gives the driver a choice of five different driving modes: Smart, Eco, Comfort, Sport, and Custom.
As for its exterior, it wears 17-inch alloy wheels, and inside, an eight-inch touchscreen multimedia with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto is fitted.
With a larger exterior size, the Kia Seltos can be for those who might find the T-Cross too compact for their liking.
Garbed with LED lights front and back, a piano black roof with panoramic sunroof, a front spoiler and rear diffuser, and 18-inch wheels, the top-spec Geely Coolray does look cool.
It also stays true to its "Sport" moniker, too, with a 1.5-liter three-cylinder turbo engine driving the front wheels. With 175hp and 255Nm and a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission, the car manages to reach an estimated zero-100 kph in 7.9 seconds.
Suzuki Jimny GL Monotone 4AT (P1.155 million)
For P43,000 less than the T-Cross SE, the mid-spec variant of the famous and famously rectilinear Jimny can be had.
The Jimny's hardware makes it a true off-roader. With a ladder frame chassis, the body rides on three-link rigid axle suspensions with coil springs.
Meanwhile, it has an AllGrip Pro part-time, four-wheel-drive system with low-range transfer gear. Ground clearance sits at a comfy 210 millimeters, and approach, break over, and departure angles of 37-, 28-, and 49-degrees, respectively.
Under the hood of the Suzuki Jimny is a 1.5-liter engine that produces 100hp and 130Nm of torque, mated to either a four-speed automatic in this variant. A five-speed manual is available in the base model (P1.095 million).
