With a lap time of six minutes and 47.3 seconds, the Porsche 911 GT2 RS is now the fastest street-legal production car around the 20.6-kilometer Nürburgring Nordschleife track, beating the record previously held by the Lamborghini Huracán LP 640-4 Performante at six minutes and 52.01 seconds.

According to Porsche's Vice President for Motorsport and GT Cars Steffen Walliser, during the 911 GT2 RS's development, it's lap time target for the vehicle was "less than seven minutes and five seconds." "The credit for beating this target by 17.7 seconds goes to our development engineers, mechanics and drivers, who demonstrated an exceptionally strong team performance," Walliser added. "This result makes it official: The GT2 RS is not only the most powerful, but also the fastest 911 ever built." The previous record was reportedly broken on the Porsche 911 GT2 RS's first attempt, with the car consistently finishing five laps under six minutes and 50 seconds with drivers Lars Kern and Nick Tandy running two vehicles. The record-setting run though was started at 7:11 p.m. with Porsche test driver and VLN Endurance Championship driver Kern behind the wheel and with an average speed of 184.11 kph.

"It's not just the record time achieved by the GT2 RS that demonstrates the vehicle’s class, but also its consistent performance in every lap," said Andreas Preuninger, director of Porsche's GT Model Line. "We're particularly proud of the fact that this was achieved with two different vehicles and two different drivers, as this underlines the GT2 RS's ability to reproduce this record result over and over again." The Porsche 911 GT2 RS debuted in June 2017 at the Goodwood Festival of Speed in the United Kingdom. It's powered by a 3.8-liter, flat-six, twin-turbo engine that puts down all 700 hp and 750 Nm of torque to the rear wheels. With a weight of 1,470 kg with a full tank of fuel, the car can sprint from zero to 100 kph in 2.8 seconds before it reaches its top speed of 340 kph.
