Range Rover to Use First-Ever Inline-Six Gasoline Engine

Range Rover is in for a lot of big changes this year. Not only is its 2019 Range Rover Sport making its grand entrance this summer, but they are also using the most technologically-advanced engine yet--a 3.0-liter Ingenium six-cylinder inline-six with an electric supercharger and a 48-volt mild-hybrid system.

In case you missed it, note that there's an inline-six written there somewhere. This is the first time that Range Rover is actually fitting its models with an inline-six, gasoline engine. Land Rover traditionally used mainly inline-four, inline-five, and V-8 engines ever since they started 70 years ago.

Autonews.com also reported that the inline-six will also be fitted in Jaguar's sports cars and sedans. They will be manufactured in Jaguar Land Rover's Wolverhampton engine plant in England, and with two trims available: the P360 and P400 variants.

Jaguar isn't the only one planning to work with inline-sixes in their models. Automotive News also reported that Mercedes-Benz, General Motors, Fiat-Chrysler Automobiles, and Mazda are all planning to come out with inline sixes soon.

In-line engines, despite having simple designs, have low manufacturing costs. They are easy to maintain, because their straight configuration allows better access to all the spark plugs and other. What's more, inline engines allow for a more balanced, smooth-revving engine.
