Suzuki to spend ¥4 trillion to push for sustainable mobility by 2030

Suzuki Motor Corporation will be investing a total of ¥4 trillion in research and development as well as capital expenditures by 2030 as part of its move to push for carbon neutrality.

Of the said amount, the Japanese automotive marque said in a statement that it will use ¥2 trillion in research and development in areas covering electrification and biogas, as well as autonomous mobility. The remaining ¥2.5 trillion will be utilized in creating battery electric vehicle (BEV) battery plants and renewable energy facilities.

The aforementioned target is part of the company’s growth strategy for fiscal year 2030.

“With the motto to deliver ‘value-packed products’ by focusing on the customer, Suzuki will carry out its unique Growth Strategy for FY2030 by operating under the principle of manufacturing ‘Sho-Sho-Kei-Tan-Bi (Smaller, Fewer, Lighter, Shorter, Beauty)’, ‘Lean Management’ which emphasizes flexibility, agility, and the challenging spirit, and the ‘Three Actuals’ principle, which omits impracticality and focuses on the actual place, thing, and situation,” Suzuki said in a statement.

According to Suzuki, it will contribute to the realization of a carbon neutral society and the economic growth of emerging countries such as India, ASEAN, and Africa — with its main business regions, Japan, India, and Europe, as the core.

“We will focus on creating solutions that are unique to Suzuki, which are to develop products and services focused on the customer, and grow along with the operating countries and regions,” it added.

Per Suzuki, is aiming to reach carbon neutrality in Japan and Europe by 2050 and in India by 2070 as based on the target date set by each country to expand their customers' choices and deliver products and services that meet the needs of each region.

Suzuki shared its plan for the company’s automobile division in major markets.

For Japan, the global marque is planning to introduce compact sport utility vehicles (SUV) and passenger mini vehicles, with six models to be launched by 2030. The company will also develop new hybrid models for mini and compact vehicles and combine them with BEV to offer more options to vehicle buyers.

Meanwhile, the brand will launch BEV by 2024 in Europe, expand to SUV and B-segments models, with five models to be launched by 2030.

Additionally, Suzuki will introduce the SUV battery EV in India that was announced at the Auto Expo 2023 starting next year, with a total of six models to be launched by 2030. To provide a full range of products and services, Suzuki will provide not only battery EV but also carbon neutral internal combustion engine vehicles that use compressed natural gas (CNG), biogas, and ethanol mixed fuels.

Moreover, Suzuki’s goal for sustainable mobility covers the two-wheel division as well.

The company shall introduce a motorcycle BEV by 2024 and is planning to reveal eight models by FY2030 with a battery EV ratio of 25 percent. The company is also aimed at adopting carbon neutral fuels for its large motorcycles.

Further, Suzuki’s outboard motors will also have BEV options in 2024 and will unveil five models by 2030 with a battery EV ratio of five percent. For large outboard motors used in the ocean, we are considering adopting carbon neutral fuels.
