BMW wants the world to know that its 2022 2 Series Coupé is a driver's car. It said the 2 Series Coupé possesses "dynamic excellence, an athletic design, powerful engine options, and sophisticated chassis technology."
That dynamism comes from the car's balanced 50:50 weight distribution and a low center of gravity.
Compared to the old car, the new 2 Series Coupé has a 55-millimeter-longer wheelbase, while the front and rear tracks have been increased by 54mm and 31mm, respectively. The ride height is lowered by 28mm.
For better turn-in ability, BMW said the car's negative camber has been upped to 30 degrees on its front axle.
At launch, the 2 Series Coupé will come in three flavors: 220i, 220d, which are both rear-wheel drive, and the all-wheel drive M240i xDrive.
The 220i's two-liter turbo-gasoline four-cylinder nets 184hp and 300Nm of torque. The 220d's two-liter diesel features a mild-hybrid system, and 190hp and 400Nm. An eight-speed auto is paired to both the 220i and 220d.
The same transmission is also used in the M240i xDrive, which also retains the three-liter straight-six engine that BMW is known for. The 2 Series Coupé xDrive's engine makes 374hp and 500Nm, which results in a zero-to-100kph time of 4.3 seconds.
While the M240i xDrive is AWD, BMW said that the majority of the power is sent to the rear wheels.
Inside, the BMW Operating System 7 will be found in the 8.8-inch infotainment, while the instrument cluster with 5.1-inch color display is part of the standard BMW Live Cockpit.
Optional BMW Live Cockpit Professional comes with a fully digital 12.3-inch instrument cluster and 10.25-inch control display. BMW said it's an intuitive system, which allows for multimodal operation using the touchscreen display, BMW Controller, steering wheel buttons, or voice control.
The 2 Series Coupé will be built at the BMW Group’s San Luis Potosí plant in Mexico. Market launch will commence in 2022, BMW said.
