The US Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) updated its annual list of "affordable, safe and reliable vehicles for teens" for 2021.
The following Nissan new and pre-owned models made the list: the 2021 Altima sedan and Murano crossover.
Only 2021 vehicles that come with vehicle-to-vehicle automatic emergency braking as standard equipment are included in the recommendations, the IIHS explained.
Both the Altima and Murano were recently awarded the Top Safety Pick Plus (TSP+) rating from IIHS as well. TSP+ is awarded to vehicles that provide the highest level of safety.
On the other hand, the IIHS-recommended used Nissan cars for teens are the Rogue crossover (from 2014 to 2018 model years), and the Murano (from 2015 to 2020).
To qualify for consideration on the pre-owned list, vehicles had to earn good ratings in the IIHS moderate overlap front, side, roof strength, and head restraint tests, the US safety body said.
If rated by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), they earned four or five stars overall. All cars with the ratings come with standard electronic stability control, and have a curb weight greater than 2,750 pounds (1,247kg).
According to IIHS, "the new vehicle list is especially useful for parents of younger children who might be buying a vehicle for their own use with an eye toward handing it down to a new driver in the future."
The Rogue goes by the name X-Trail here in the Philippines. The X-Trail features Nissan Intelligent Mobility (NIM), a suite of driving assistance systems.
NIM systems include automatic emergency braking with pedestrian detection, and rear cross traffic monitoring to alert the driver when he or she is reversing into unseen traffic.
A moving object detection system sends out warnings and alerts, and can even perform semi-autonomous driving duties when needed. A 360-degree camera provides an all-around bird’s eye view of the car’s surroundings.
In the states, the 2021 Altima is offered in front-wheel and all-wheel drive, and a choice of two engines, one of which is a 2.0-liter turbocharged inline four cylinder.
Since its first generation was launched 2003, the Murano has "stood apart from the competition with its sculptural exterior, elegant interior and choice of front-wheel or all-wheel drive powertrains," Nissan said. For the 2021 model year, Nissan Safety Shield 360 becomes standard on all Murano varieties.
