BMW has updated the 5-Series sedan for 2022 and it now comes with a few changes to its design and technology. The 530e and 530e xDrive models now feature 19-inch alloy wheels while the M550i xDrive version comes with remote start function as standard. This updated model is yet to reach the Philippines' shores. For now, the 5-Series sedan is available in four variants in the market and starts at Php 3.79 Million. You either get a 2.0-litre mill with 190 hp output or a 3.0-litre mill with 265 hp output according to the variant.

The BMW has upgraded its signature luxury executive sedan. The BMW 5 Series mid-size sedan is the German automaker’s flagship vehicle--and arguably their most stylish and luxurious model. The 5 Series is particularly known for being a luxury symbol, showcasing the kind of elegance that only a carmaker like BMW can achieve. But besides it sporty and premium design, it also manages to blend together practicality and convenience for the modern Filipino driver that’s always on the go. The latest generation features the signature dynamism of the BMW brand, as well as new a myriad of premium upgrades that guarantee a one-of-a-kind driving experience. Three variants are available in the local market: the 520d Luxury, the M Sport, and the 530d Luxury which also has its own lower and higher-spec trim offerings.

BMW 5 Series Sedan Interior
The inside of the 5 Series sedan includes the best in comfort and luxury. All trims are fitted with the new perforated SensaTec upholstery that has contrast stitching. Higher trims will have touches of optional Dakota leather or Nappa leather. All variants also have sports seats as standard and feature 40/20/40 split-fold rear seats. The 5 Series is built on the BMW Live Cockpit Professional with iDrive 7 system which can be accessed through the 12.3-inch digital instrument display, as well as another digital center touchscreen control display which is now much larger compared to the previous generation’s 10.25-inch one.

One of the great things about the 5 Series is that it manages to be elegant without being too loud or aggressive about it. The exterior design includes a long bonnet and sculpted haunches that give it a subtle but stylish appearance. Obvious new design choices can be noticed on the front fascia where a taller and wider grille is now installed. This new grille now stretches further down into the front bumper. This is flanked by slimmer LED headlights that include L-shaped DLR elements which also serve as the turn signals. The dimensions of the 5 Series has also grown, making the vehicle a bit more lengthy compared to the previous generation. This not only gives the model a more sweeping look but has also improved the aerodynamics of the car itself. According to BMW, the drag only reaching as low as 0.27 coefficient in certain circumstances. The M Sport trim has some additional benefits such as a redesigned front and rear bumpers, larger front air intakes, and a new rear diffuser panel.

The turbo-six engine delivers excellent acceleration. However, out of all the trims, the M variant delivers the best possible performance. These can easily go from 0 to 100 in just 3.6 seconds. All sedans under the 5 Series have sharp steering and adept handling, making it an enjoyable car to drive. The premium features also guarantee a well-cushioned ride that’s expected from a luxury sedan. All sedans also have all-wheel drive as standard.

BMW 5 Series Sedan Engine & Fuel Consumption
All 5 Series sedan trims are powered by BMW’s latest TwinPower turbocharging technology. Drivers can choose between three 4-cylinder engines (two gasoline and one diesel) or three 6-cylinder engines which generate varying power outputs. The 520i has an output of 184 hp and 290 Nm of torque, while the higher 530i gasoline option generates 252 hp and 350 Nm of torque. On the other hand, the diesel 520d has 190 hp and 400 Nm of torque. For the 6-cylinder options, the 540i can generate 333 hp and 450 Nm of torque, while the 530d has 286 hp and 650 Nm. The higher 540d produces a 340 hp and 700 Nm of torque. There is also the M550i, a V8 gasoline option which generates a whopping 530 hp and 750 Nm of torque.
However, BMW will only be offering the 520d and 530d for the Philippines. The M Sport variant will be powered by the same engine as the 520d while the 530d will offer a higher and lower spec variant. These will be equipped with a 3-liter inline 6-cylinder engine that produces 265 hp and 620 Nm of torque.
All engines include direct injection, fully variable valve timing, and variable camshaft timing. These are mated to an 8-speed automatic Steptronic transmission which features new torsion dampers that aims to make shifting more comfortable and smooth.

The 5 Series Sedan is equipped with a multitude of safety features. Besides a complete suite of driver-assist systems, one of its key features is the new Drive Recorder. This allows the driver assistance systems’ cameras to record video footage from around the vehicle which can then be viewed via the Control Display. This can also be exported through the USB port. Other standard safety features include a driver airbag, a passenger airbag, side airbag-front, anti-lock braking system with electronic brake distribution, a vehicle stability control system, rear camera, parking sensors, crash sensors, front and side-impact beams, and child safety locks.
