The Alliance, a group consisting of today’s largest leading automotive brand, Renault Group, Nissan Motor Co., Ltd., and Mitsubishi Motors Corporation, revealed plans for 2030. Alliance member Mitsubishi Motors shared the common projects and actions planned by the three automotive brands to accelerate and shape their shared future into 2030.

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • Who are the members of the Alliance?

Alliance members include the Renault Group, Nissan Motor Co. Ltd., and Mitsubishi Motors Corporation.
  • What areas will the Alliance focus on in its 2030 plans?

According to the Alliance, the 2030 plans will focus on pure electric vehicles and connected mobility.
  • According to Mitsubishi, the focus of the Alliance’s common goal points towards pure electric vehicles and connected mobility.

“Among the world's automotive leaders, the Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi Alliance is a proven, unique model. For 22 years, we have been building on our respective cultures and strengths for our common benefit. Today the Alliance is accelerating to lead the mobility revolution and deliver more value to customers, our people, our shareholders, and all our stakeholders. The three member-companies have defined a common roadmap towards 2030, sharing investments in future electrification and connectivity projects. These are massive investments that none of the three companies could make alone. Together, we are making the difference for a new and global sustainable future; the Alliance becoming carbon neutral by 2050,” said Alliance Chairman Jean-Dominique Senard.

The Alliance’s 2030 roadmap builds on its Leader-Follower scheme, defined in May 2020.

Under the Leader-Follower scheme, select technologies will be developed by one leading team with the support of the followers, thereby allowing each member of the Alliance to access all the key technologies.

Likewise, the 2030 roadmap on pure EV and intelligent and connected mobility will allow its members to share investments for the benefit of each company and their customers.

On that note, Alliance members developed what they call a ”smart differentiation” which helps them “define the desired level of commonality for each vehicle, integrating several parameters of possible pooling, such as platforms, production plants, powertrains, or vehicle segment.”

For example, the common platform for the C and D segment will carry five models from three brands of the Alliance (Nissan Qashqai and X-trail, Mitsubishi Outlander, Renault Austral, and an upcoming seven-seater SUV).

To strengthen this process, Alliance members will enhance the usage of common platforms in the coming years from 60 percent today to more than 80 percent of its combined 90 models in 2026, which Mitsubishi said will “allow each company to deepen their focus on their customers' needs, their best models and core markets, while also extending innovations across the Alliance, at a lower cost.”

As part of this, Mitsubishi Motors will reinforce its presence in Europe with two new models, among them the new ASX based on Renault's best-sellers.

In addition, Renault, Nissan, and Mitsubishi look to release 35 new EV models by 2030. Mitsubishi says that 90 percent of these models will be based on five common EV platforms, covering most markets, in all major regions.

The EV platforms include the affordable CMF-AEV platform, the ultra-compact KEI-EV platform, the commercially oriented LCV-EV Family platform, the versatile CMF-EV platform, and the competitive CMF-BEV platform.

On top of increasing the utilization of their EV platforms, Alliance members also have a common battery strategy for Renault and Nissan models in core markets. The three members are working with common partners to achieve real scale and affordability, allowing them to reduce battery costs by 50 percent in 2026 and 65 percent by 2028.

Beyond that, the Alliance shares a common vision for all-solid-state battery technology (ASSB). Based on its deep expertise and unique experience as a pioneer in battery technology, Nissan will lead innovations in this area that will benefit all Alliance members.

The Alliance looks to mass-produce ASSB by mid-2028, accelerating the global shift to EVs.

Another component of the 2030 roadmap is to strike strategic partnerships with other companies to offer the best proposal to customers for public charging on the road.

In the area of connected mobility, the Alliance will continue to improve real-world driving safety, convenience, and enjoyment by delivering innovations in intelligent vehicle and driver assistance technologies. A good example is Nissan’s award-winning ProPILOT system.

By 2026, the Alliance targets to equip 10 million vehicles across 45 Alliance models with autonomous driving systems.

Today, three million vehicles are already connected to the Alliance Cloud with permanent data exchanges, and by 2026, more than 5 million Alliance cloud systems will be delivered per year.

In 2025, the Alliance will launch its first full software-defined vehicle.

Mitsubishi says that the Alliance looks to pave the way for the automotive industry's next frontier with Renault Group, Nissan Motor Co., Ltd, and Mitsubishi Motors positioned at the forefront of this revolution.
