Backup Camera Issue Triggers Toyota Supra, Rolls-Royce, BMW Recall

Toyota Supra

The Toyota Supra, along with some models by BMW and Rolls-Royce, have a problem with their back-up cameras—if users set the brightness and contrast to their lowest setting, the rearview image will no longer be visible. And the setting does not reset even when the vehicle is shut off and restarted.

Though this may sound like a minor issue, it is actually out of compliance with the United States' Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS).

The American federal agency filed the recall on September 27,2019, and Toyota, BMW, and Rolls-Royce promised to begin notifying car owners as soon as possible. Whether or not the aforementioned carmakers will extend their recall announcement to models sold outside of the United States remains to be seen.

The solution for the issue is a software upgrade that reduces the range of the brightness and contrast adjustments so that the minimum setting still shows a discernible rearview image.

The recall affects the 2020 Toyota Supra, 2019 Rolls-Royce Cullinan, 2018/2019 Rolls-Royce Phantom, and basically every car built by BMW since 2018.
