Brembo revealed some of the features of the braking systems to be used in the 2023 Formula 1 season.

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • How light are the brakes used for the 2023 Formula 1 race cars?

According to Brembo, the brakes used for the 2023 Formula 1 race cars are 300 to 350 grams lighter compared to the brakes used in 2022.
  • How many teams in the 2023 Formula 1 will use the by-wire units developed by Brembo and AP Racing?

Per Brembo, five teams in the 2023 Formula 1 will use the by-wire units developed by Brembo and AP Racing.
  • According to the Italian brake solutions provider, the 2023 Formula 1 brake systems are around 300 to 350 grams lighter compared to the brakes used in the previous year. In order to achieve this result, engineers from Brembo worked hard to optimize the design of the different components, calipers, and carbon parts, while taking the geometries to extremes.

For those who do not know, Formula 1 teams spend a huge amount of time and money to develop lighter cars. That said, lighter brakes allow race car engineers can enjoy more margin to better balance the cars.

The carbon discs used for the 2023 Formula 1 brakes now have a diameter of 328 millimeters (mm) at the front and 280mm at the rear. Previously, the carbon discs measured 278mm at the front and 266mm at the rear.

For 2023, Formula 1 regulation states that drilled pads are now banned.

The calipers, on the other hand, are made with new nickel plating. They will also have six pistons — the maximum number allowed by the regulations.

Five teams vying for Formula 1 victory this 2023 will also use the by-wire units developed by Brembo and AP Racing to manage rear braking. The system balances out the braking forces between the front and rear axles, instantly changing the dissipative braking contribution according to the regenerative one, and ensuring the right balance between the front and rear axles.
