Chevrolet PH Recalls Chevrolet Cruze, Orlando, Sonic for Defective Takata Driver's Airbags

General Motors Thailand (GMTh) is recalling certain models of the Chevrolet Cruze, Chevrolet Orlando, and Chevrolet Sonic after the American carmaker discovered during a routine inspection of its vehicles that some of the Takata driver's airbags fitted in the said vehicles are made with non-desiccated Phased Stabilized Ammonium Nitrate as a propellant that, over time, may degrade due to a combination of a humid environment and long-term exposure to high temperature.

Although GMTh has not received any reports of injuries or damages caused by the said condition, it may "alter its performance, and may cause the airbag to go off with too much force...that may cause sharp metal fragments to shoot out and cause injury."

As such, The Covenant Car Company, Inc. (TCCCI), the authorized distributor of Chevrolet in the Philippines, is conducting a Special Service Campaign for 3,430 units the following vehicles:

In response, TCCCI will inspect the Takata driver's airbag of the aforementioned vehicles and repair, or if necessary, replace it with a new one at no cost to its customers.

TCCCI will notify its concerned customers through Official Notification Letters and invite them to bring their vehicles to any of the Chevrolet Customer Service Centers for the Special Service Campaign.
