Dubai Police Adds Flying Bikes to Its Patrolling Fleet

Dubai Police Scorpion

Dubai Police announced that they will soon make use of flying motorbikes in patrolling local streets. When realized, the battery-powered flying bikes, which rely on four propellers to stay airborne, will have Dubai's enforcers buzzing around the skies at speeds of up to 70 kilometers per hour.

The flying motorbike of the Dubai Police is called the Scorpion, and is manufactured by Hoversurf, a Russian aero-design company. The vehicle can fly at a height of five meters and ferry an officer over traffic during emergency situations, according to First Sergeant Ali Ahmad Mohammad.

“(The Scorpion) can fly for 25 minutes and can carry up to 300kg of weight at a speed of 70 kph,” Mohammad said in an interview. “The bike can also fly without a passenger and can go up to six kilometers.”

A cutting-edge fleet

Dubai Police unveiled the aircraft at this year’s Gitex Technology show, the Middle East’s largest annual computer and electronics trade event. The enforcement agency adds the Scorpion to its growing list of cutting-edge patrolling fleet, which includes a Ferrari FF, Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG, Lamborghini Aventador, Aston Martin One 77, and Bugatti Veyron.

On his Facebook page, Hoversurf CEO Alexander Atamanov said that his company and the Dubai Police have signed a memorandum of understanding to mass-produce the aircraft in Dubai.

Other Dubai Police tech

Aside from the Scorpion, Dubai Police also showcased other new pieces of tech and gadgetry that it aims to use to promote peace and order in the United Arab Emirates’ largest and most populous city. These included an electric auto-balancing motorbike with multiple cameras to spot reckless drivers, and self-driving police cars equipped with biometric software that it can use to scan crowds for criminals and persons of interest as it patrols the city.

"It can recognize people in any area and identify suspicious objects and can track suspects," Brigadier Khalid Nasser Al Razooqi, director of the Smart Services Department at Dubai Police, said in an interview. "It will be deployed at tourist destinations in Dubai. It has cameras and will be linked to the command room."
