Estrella-Pantaleon Bridge enters 'wrap-up' construction stage, is 88% done

The Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) appears poised to achieve its goal to open the Estrella Pantaleon-Bridge by mid 2021. DPWH secretary Mark Villar announced that the bridge project has already entered the "wrap-up" stage with the substructure and superstructure already completed.

"Even with the challenges brought about by the pandemic, the project to date is 88 percent complete and we are now wrapping up the construction of the expanded Estrella-Pantaleon Bridge, also known as the Rockwell Bridge," Villar said.

In his report to Secretary Villar, Undersecretary for Unified Project Management Office (UPMO) Operations Emil Sadain reported that in keeping with the 2021 target, the final concrete pouring of bridge deck slab was held last April 23.

The DPWH said the Estrella-Pantaleon bridge is an important connection project across Pasig River, and is intended to decongest EDSA traffic.

The old two-way, two-lane steel bridge was replaced with a concrete rigid frame bridge with V-shape piers. It now has four lanes of concrete deck slab, which measures 506.46 lineal meters in length, the agency added.

Once opened to motorists, the widened Estrella-Pantaleon Bridge will be able to accommodate around 50,000 vehicles per day.

The bridge project connects the Estrella Street in Makati, and Barangka Drive in Mandaluyong. It is one of the two grant bridges from China being implemented by DPWH-UPMO Roads Management Cluster 1.

The other bridge funded by a China grant and also in an advanced stage completion is the Binondo-Intramuros Bridge in Manila.

The Binondo-Intramuros Bridge is constructed with a basket-handle tied steel arch design. It will connect Solana Street and Riverside Drive in Intramuros, Manila, with Rentas Street/Plaza del Conde Street, and Muelle dela Industria in Binondo, Manila.

This bridge will able to carry traffic of around 30,000 vehicles per day. the DPWH said.
