Honda Cars Philippines Inc. (HCPI) removed the drapes off the sixth-generation Civic Type R last week and its arrival means that Filipino car buyers can now get the chance to own a sleeker, more mature-looking, souped-up version of the brand’s iconic car.
In its previous iterations, the Honda Civic Type R featured conspicuous aerodynamic body kits that somewhat make it look like it came straight out of Japanese anime. And while it made for a good backdrop for Honda’s Type R-specific finishes, the stylish modern minimalist look of the sixth-gen model makes for a better canvas for the carmaker’s two specially-reserved hues.

The Championship white finish is as synonymous as the Honda Civic Type R. And while this achromatic shade typically resembles safety, it evokes power and performance when worn by the Honda Civic Type R.
Myths were told about the origins of the Championship White paint. Others say it was derived from the “white” in the Japanese flag, while some say it resembles the humble roots of the Civic as an economy road-going car.
However, the most famous — and probably most believable — story behind the origin of the Championship White paint is that the carmaker used it as a nod to the first Formula 1-winning Honda car, the Honda RA272.
A quick look at the automotive history book reveals that the Honda RA272, which participated in the 1965 Formula 1 season and won that year's Mexican Grand Prix, was white. Richie Ginther, who drove the famous Honda RA272, gave Honda its first taste of Formula 1 victory.
On the current Honda Civic Type R, the Championship White paint evokes a winning spirit and a heritage-rich lineage — something its owners can be proud of. Further, the white paint makes the red Honda emblems and the Type R badges pop out.
In classic sleeper-build fashion, a white unassuming Honda Civic Type R can definitely smoke most cars, both on the street and inside the track.
Those who do not want to ride the Championship White bandwagon often go with Honda’s alternative hue — Racing Blue.
While some would say it was inspired by the blue-and-yellow liveries worn by Spoon-tuned Honda models, others will argue that it represents calm and composure. On that note, this paint makes for a befitting color for would-be owners who are impressed with the new Honda Civic Type R’s somewhat tamed look.
But make no mistake, the sedan packs quite a punch as it is dubbed the most powerful model of all Type R versions to date.
On paper, the sixth-generation Civic Type R makes as much as 315 horsepower with 420Nm of almost instantaneous torque. This is all thanks to its 2.0-liter 16-valve DOHC VTEC engine mated to a six-speed manual transmission with a Rev Match Control System.
In addition, the new Honda Civic Type R comes with four driving modes (Comfort, Sport, +R, and individual mode) making it a force to reckon with both on the circuit and on city streets.
The sixth-gen Honda Civic Type R is available in a single variant and has a sticker price of P3.88 million.
