LTO extends driver’s license validity

The Land Transportation Office (LTO) has extended the validity of the driver’s licenses that will be expiring starting today.

In a post over its social media page, the agency announced that the extension of the validity is up to October 31 this year following the shortage on the supply of plastic cards that the LTO is currently experiencing.

Earlier, the Department of Transportation (DOTr) said in a separate statement that it is currently working to be allowed to purchase part of the total volume of license cards that the LTO needs “while the Terms of Reference (TOR) submitted by LTO in late March 2023 to the DOTr Bids and Awards Committee (BAC) is being evaluated.”

“The DOTr is communicating with the Government Procurement Policy Board-Technical Support Office (under the Department of Budget and Management) to expedite the purchase of the license cards, after LTO’s failure to undertake early procurement activities in compliance with existing rules,” the transportation department noted.

Further, the government arm said that its bids and awards committee “decided to assess the TOR to determine a more efficient, effective and economic option at procuring the license cards” after a pre-bidding conference was conducted last April 12.

“DOTr hopes to procure enough license cards before supply runs out and while the TOR is being remedied so the bidding for supply of license cards can proceed,”

Prior to this, the LTO said that the official receipts can be used as temporary driver’s licenses.

According to the LTO, its plastic card supply is now around 140,000, which can only last up to this month.
