Mahindra to be joined by electric mobility arm for EV development

The Mahindra Group will be joined by the Mahindra Electric Mobility Limited (MEML) to develop electric vehicles (EVs) and mobility solutions.

The Mahindra Group manufactures automobiles, buses, construction and farm equipment, and motorcycles, among many other kinds of machines.

As it merges with MEML, the company will focus on last mile mobility (LMM) and the development of an Electric Vehicle Tech Center. LMM is defined as vehicles such as shared bicycles or small mobility vehicles that can be used in the last stretch of the journey.

The EV Tech Center will be able to strengthen the development capability of the Mahindra Group in North America and Europe, while also allowing the company to explore partnerships with other companies, Mahindra added.

Mahindra Executive Director Rajesh Jejurikar said, “Electric vehicles will be the future of the automotive business. To be future ready, we believe that the EVs should be part of the core and mainstream business. "

Jejurikar added that the merging will "electrify various segments that will popularize e-mobility... We will continue to draw upon our deep understanding of customer needs to bring in exciting new products in the EV space," he concluded.

Aside from last mile mobility, the Mahindra Group and MEML are also focused on the entire EV ecosystem including fleet mobility, and research and development on personal mobility.

Mahindra has touted itself as the pioneer of EVs and EV technology in India. Its EV journey began more than two decades old with the Bijlee, India’s first commercial and roadworthy electric vehicle.

Since then, EVs have been an important part of its business with a range of passenger and commercial vehicles. There are over 32,000 Mahindra EVs on Indian roads which have covered more than 270 million kilometers.

Aside from vehicles, the Mahindra Group is also part of other industries such as information technology, financial services, renewable energy, agribusiness, logistics, and real estate development. Headquartered in India, the company employs over two million people across 100 countries.
