MMDA hints possible number coding suspension next week

The leadership of the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) announced the possible lifting of the Unified Vehicular Volume Reduction Program (UVVRP, commonly known as the number coding scheme) next week.

MMDA Acting Chairman Romando Artes made the announcement in response to the upcoming week-long transport strike.

According to Artes, the agency might lift the aforementioned traffic mitigation scheme on Monday (March 6) as groups are expected to have the transport strike by then up to March 12.

"The MMDA will deploy buses to ferry stranded passengers should the transport strike push through next week. We shall coordinate with the Department of Transportation and Department of Interior and Local Government on the matter,” Artes said.

The MMDA, Artes added, will make the announcement pertaining to the possible UVVRP suspension tomorrow (March 3).

Per MMDA, the strike is to express the transportation groups’ opposition to the public utility vehicle modernization program.

Earlier, the Land Transportation Franchising Regulatory Board (LTFRB) has extended for the fourth time the validity of traditional jeeps’ franchises.
