More vehicle buyers shift to xEVs

MANILA: The demand for electrified vehicles (xEV) continues to grow as far as the members of the Chamber of Automotive Manufacturers of the Philippines, Incorporated (CAMPI) and the Truck Manufacturers Association (TMA) are concerned.

    Plug-in hybrid models showed the biggest increase in terms of percentage after their sales grew by 1,083 percent—selling 556 units in January-February 2026 compared to 47 vehicles over the same timeline in the previous year.

    The hybrid electric vehicle category is still the leading xEV segment, with a retail volume of 4,551. This reflects a 50-percent rise over the 3,034 units delivered to customers over the same period in 2025.

    Meanwhile, battery electric vehicles (BEV) experienced a 77-percent jump after selling 594 units in the past two months.

    CAMPI President Jose Maria Atienza attributed the shift in preference to the conflict in the Middle East.

    While the demand for all three categories is on the rise, the two group’s collective sales are down by around nine percent.

    As stated in the same report, the CAMPI-TMA’s collective sales were only 69,538 units. This is a 9.4-percent slide from the 76,768 units turned over to buyers during the first two months of 2025.

    Last month alone, 35,842 units were delivered to clients, which is 8.5 percent less than 39,164 vehicles delivered to clients in February of the previous year. Conversely, the two groups also saw a 6.4-percent improvement in volume compared to January 2026’s 33,696-unit churn.

    Other stories:

    CAMPI-TMA’s sales drivers are nameplates belonging to the commercial vehicle segment. Here, 56,312 units were sold, accounting for 80.98 percent of the organizations’ churn.

    On the other hand, the passenger car segment contributed 13,226 units to the CAMPI-TMA February 2026 year-to-date total sales.

    Maintaining their posts as frontrunners are Toyota Motor Philippines and Mitsubishi Motors Philippines Corporation after selling 34,300, and 14,361 examples, respectively.

    Nissan Philippines Incorporated is just 113 vehicles shy of Suzuki Philippines Incorporated, who is the current third placer after selling 3,256 units.

    Ford Philippines completed the top five CAMPI-TMA lineup with its 2,607-unit sales churn.
