KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • What Valenzuela City ordinance allowed motorcycle riders to use the bicycle lanes?

Ordinance No. 1064 Series of 2022 states that motorcycles can use bicycle lanes along Valenzuela City's McArthur Highway stretch.
  • What are the limitations stated in the ordinance?

The ordinance states that motorcycle riders can use the bicycle lanes from Mondays to Fridays only and that they should follow the 20kph speed limit.
  • In a video posted over the city’s official Facebook page, Valenzuela City Mayor Wes Gatchalian considered the latest development as a “Christmas gift” to motorists.

Since it is the holiday season and there are many people going to malls, food bazaars, and other locations, it is really inevitable that there will be heavy traffic here in our beloved city. So, I have good news, and this is probably a Christmas gift to our motorists: single motorcycles will be allowed to pass through our designated bike lane on MacArthur Highway),” Gatchalian said in the video.

Based on Ordinance No. 1064 Series of 2022 (which was approved last November 28), allowing motorcycles to use the bicycle lanes will efficiently utilize the road and alleviate traffic congestion.

The aforementioned ordinance said that riders who will take advantage of the bicycle lane must follow the 20-kilometer-per-hour speed limit.

“Single motorcycles, however, to further mitigate traffic decongestion, are allowed to share the use of these exclusive lanes except on Saturdays and Sundays which are exclusively designated for bicycles and e-scooters,” the ordinance added.

Further, Gatchalian noted in the video that pedicabs and tricycles are still prohibited to use bike lanes.
