Nissan's Rear Door Alert is a Tech for Absent-Minded Drivers
Last year, Nissan developed a technology--dubbed as the Rear Door Alert (RDA)--that could make the lives of forgetful drivers easier and more convenient. This tech is designed to remind the driver to check the back seat before and after exiting the vehicle--in case he/she forget that his/her baby or pet is there. While we argue among ourselves on why would someone forget such a precious cargo, Nissan is making the Rear Door Alert tech standard on the all-new Altima and Rogue. Then, in 2022, the Japanese automaker is looking to make RDA a standard feature on all its four-door trucks, sedans, and SUVs.
RDA was originally developed by two female engineers who are also mothers--Marlene Mendoza and Elsa Foley. As said earlier, this tech reminds vehicle owners to check the back seat before and after exiting the car. It sends a notification if a rear door was used prior to a trip, but was not re-opened after the trip. When the vehicle is parked and the ignition is turned off, Nissan says the RDA will first display a notification in the instrument panel. Afterwards, RDA will activate the car's horn to further get the attention of the driver.
"The idea was inspired when I accidentally left a pan of lasagna in the back seat of my car overnight. The worst thing was the car smelled for days, but it made me ask myself, 'What if I left something far more important back there?'," Mendoza said.
