As part of its efforts to integrate sustainability, the NLEX Corporation has installed more resource-saving systems in its facilities.

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • What are the NLEX Corporation's latest sustainability-related efforts?

The NLEX Corporation's latest sustainability-related initiatives are the installation of rainwater catchments and motion-sensor lighting systems.
  • How much rainwater can the NLEX Corporation's catchments carry?

The catchments can carry around 2,000 liters of rainwater.
  • In a statement, the tollway company said that it has initially put up two rainwater collection systems in SCTEX Floridablanca and Dinalupihan rest bays. The water collected in the catchments (which can carry approximately 2,000 liters) will be used for the public restrooms there.

Meanwhile, the NLEX Corporation said that the motion-sensor lights in its buildings have been put up to reduce its carbon footprint. The said illumination system only lights up when movement is detected to minimize wasted energy.

Close to 100 motion-sensor lights will be placed within the year in 12 NLEX-SCTEX offices located in Caloocan City, Valenzuela City, Bulacan, and Pampanga.

“With sustainability at the core of our values, we always ensure that our operations and environmental responsibility programs center on cutting our carbon footprint, reducing waste, and improving resource efficiency all for the benefit of our communities, more so the next generation,” NLEX Corporation President and General Manager J. Luigi Bautista said.

According to him, the initiatives are also aligned with the Metro Pacific Group’s commitment to help the country meet the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals 6 (Clean Water and Sanitation), 7 (Affordable and Clean Energy), 12 (Sustainable Consumption and Production Patterns), and 13 (Climate Action).

Further, NLEX said that it has been using solar power panels and LED lights in its operations that helped them cut down carbon emissions by roughly 5,000 tons, which is equivalent to around 229,358 trees saved.

It has also strictly prohibited single-use plastics in food deliveries, canteen operations, and other food services within its premises to reduce plastic pollution and has planted around 200,000 trees in the entire road network as part of its efforts to help provide clean air on the road.
