Porsche has won its latest victory in the 2022 Edition of Le Mans, its 109th win in the event.
In a statement, the Stuttgart-headquartered automaker received its newest win in the legendary endurance race’s GTE Pro Class. The championship was from the number 91 Porsche 911 RSR race car co-driven by factory works drivers Gianmaria Bruni, Richard Lietz and Frederic Makowiecki.
The winning vehicle was able to set a new distance record for the GTE class after covering 4,769 kilometers, or more than 350 laps, finishing 42.684 seconds ahead of the second-place Ferrari entry.
“The Porsche GT Team has upheld our great tradition at the 24 Hours of Le Mans,” Porsche AG Member of the Board for Research and Development Michael Steiner was quoted as saying. “A big thank you to the team, the drivers and everyone else who contributed their expertise and passion to make this victory possible for Porsche,” he added.
Meanwhile, Porsche team’s sister car — maneuvered by Kevin Estre, Michael Christensen and Laurens Vanthoor — narrowly missed the podium after its front right tire blew out and damaged a large section of their car’s front. The repair at the pits took 10 minutes and lost three laps. The team crossed the checkered flag in fourth place afterwards.
In the GTE Am class, the number 79 911 RSR from WeatherTech Racing (steered by Julien Andlauer, Cooper MacNeil and Thomas Merrill) claimed second place and covered 343 laps.
