Select Audi vehicles to be Holoride-capable in Jun.

Audi is looking to introduce an immersive backseat riding experience come June. According to the German carmaker, select Audi vehicles — those equipped with the new MIB 3 infotainment system — will be Holoride-capable.

  • What is Holoride?

Holoride is a VR accessory designed to entertain passengers in the rear seat.
  • When will Holoride be available?

Holoride will be available starting June.
  • What system supports Holoride?

Holoride will run on the latest MIB infotainment system platform.
  • What models will be Holoride-capable?

    Holoride-capable models will include the Audi A4, A5, A6, A7, A8, among others.

Holoride will allow passengers sitting at the rear to enjoy an immersive virtual reality entertainment experience. A pair of virtual reality glasses will be available for backseat passengers to keep them engaged in various media formats including games, films, and other interactive content. The Holoride headset wirelessly connects to the Audi vehicle by way of Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE).

In addition, Audi says that Holoride-capable cars will have a feature that allows the virtual content played on the virtual reality accessory to adapt to the vehicle’s driving movements.

“For example, if the car is taking a right turn, the spaceship in the imaginary world will also fly to the right. If the car accelerates, the spaceship speeds up too,” Audi said in a press release.

“In the future, the progressive automation of travel by car will not only make new forms of entertainment possible while driving — it will also open up increased opportunities to learn and work on the road. When drivers also no longer have to concentrate on driving in the future, they can turn their attention to other things — work, reading, watching films, or gaming. The motion-synchronized voyage through virtual worlds with Holoride may also be able to reduce the common phenomenon of motion sickness often experienced by passengers reading a book or enjoying audiovisual media on electronic devices such as tablets,” read the press release.

From June, select models that roll off the line with the third generation modular infotainment toolkit (MIB 3) and the latest software cluster will be holoride-capable. The lineup includes the Audi A4, A5, A6, A7, A8, Audi Q5, Q7, Q8, Audi e-tron and Audi e-tron GT quattro.
