Suzuki opens R&D facility in India

  • Dubbed Suzuki R&D Center India Private Limited (SRDI), the new facility will allow the Indian arm of the Japanese carmaker to establish a framework that will further strengthen the brand’s competitiveness by efficiently linking the development departments of Japan and India.

    To develop the technologies needed by society together with the rich technical talent in the country, Suzuki will initially recruit employees in India.

    Suzuki will also work to create an environment conducive to the growth of diverse technical talent by building relationships with Indian universities and start-up companies and enhancing exchanges with faculty and researchers.

    The announcement for SRDI was made at an event held at Mahatma Mandir International Convention Center to commemorate the 40th anniversary of Suzuki’s Indian business.

    “Through making technology development in new fields by establishing R&D center in India wholly owned by Suzuki, we will strengthen our competitiveness and R&D capabilities not only in the Indian market but also globally,” said Suzuki President Toshihiro Suzuki during the said event.

    Here, Suzuki also staged a cornerstone laying ceremony for its battery production facility for electric vehicles located in Gujarat and a new plant site located in Kharkhoda, Haryana. The former will be established by Suzuki Motor Gujarat Private Limited while the latter will be established by Maruti Suzuki India Limited.

    The ceremony was attended by Indian Prime Minister, Narendra Modi; Gujarat Chief Minister, Bhupendrabhai Patel; and Ambassador of Japan to India, Satoshi Suzuki. Haryana Chief Minister, Manohar Lal Khattar and Maruti Suzuki’s Executive Vice Chairman, Kenichi Ayukawa attended online from the Kharkhoda construction site. President, Toshihiro Suzuki; Senior Advisor, Osamu Suzuki; and Director and Senior Managing Officer, Kinji Saito; attended from Suzuki along with Chairman Ravindra Chandra Bhargava and Managing Director, Hisashi Takeuchi from Maruti Suzuki.

    The Kharkoda automobile plant is scheduled to become operational in 2025 while the battery production plant, by 2026.
